Today we had a visit from someone who is somewhat of legend in Aish HaTorah. Rav Noach Weinberg zt’l was fond of telling the story of a young man who was traveling around and was brought into the Yeshiva by Rabbi Meir Schuster, zt’l. The young man said to Rav Noach, “I don’t need lessons on G-d. He and I are very close. He does miracles for me.” Rav Noach asked what miracles the Almighty had performed for him. The young man said that he had an accident and fell off a cliff and was miraculously saved. Ever since then he and the Almighty were “tight.”
Rav Noach smiled and slapped him on the back and said who do you think threw you off the cliff. Rav Noach’s point was that the Almighty had gotten this young man’s attention and now it was time to learn in Yeshiva. The young man spent the next month in Yeshiva and became observant.
This young man, who now is a grandparent, came back to Aish yesterday for the first time since his stay over 40 years ago. What was even more amazing was that I know his son who is an outstanding outreach worker on the West Coast.
It never ceases to amaze me how large an impact Aish HaTorah has had on the Jewish world. Because Rabbi Schuster had picked up a young man at the Western Wall, because Rav Noach made a strong case to stay in Yeshiva. Because this young man decided to seek the truth at Aish, his son has gone on to influence thousands of Jews. We must all keep spreading the Almighty’s word. Future generations are counting on us.
